Origami Rabbits

One of the really fun parts of the professional paper folding business, is that you truly never know what you’re going to create next.  About a month ago in the midst of the current global pandemic, the Taro’s Origami Studio staff were contacted to create an exclusive origami rabbit for an exclusive brand new tequila brand called Mijenta.  Their logo has an abstracted origami-like feel, so they began by looking for a way to re-create it is paper.

Origami Design

Luckily for this project, origami master Taro Yaguchi had already taken a stab at creating a bunny on his personal instragram and it felt like a great start. So our origami artists got to work on modifying it to better fit the profile of the logo rabbit.  Below you can see exactly how close we got to the original task using traditional origami techniques.

Paper Options

The next hurdle to work through was to find out the perfect colors and papers for this project.  The client was very concerned about the paper sustainability and environmental impact, so we did some research and found a number of great options that they could see in action.

After one round of color and paper checks, they decided to go closer to the original prototypes we gave earlier.  Here you can see the different hues and poses that were used as options.

In the end, here are two of the final paper and color choices.

Model Production

Once the final choices were made on poses, colors, and textures, the staff went to work getting all of the rabbits to multiply.  Special care was also taken to make sure the rabbits would stand up under their own power.  After everything was finished, there were 120 brand new rabbits ready for delivery.  they each took about 30 minutes to fold and shape out of a 1×2 sheet of paper.

Origami Diagrams

Aside from the origami hero rabbits, the tequila company also wanted Taro’s to look into creating diagrams for how to make one of your very own.  For this side of the project, we settled on a simplified version of the bunny so that most people could fold their own without too much trouble.  Frank Ling did the work on the diagrams and used their specific colors, fonts, and logos to make sure they fit exactly into their curated vision of the company.

Delivery / Videos

Lastly, Frank Ling went to the headquarters to deliver the bunnies and then also film himself folding the easier model so that there would also be a video component to make sure no one got stuck folding the rabbit.

Social Engagement

And then when everything was sent off, there was nothing else to do but have fun watching all of the praise come in from the happy folks who got one of the gift baskets from Mijenta.  Happy folding from everyone here at Taro’s Origami Studio.
