Taro’s Origami Studio recently provided an interactive origami workshop at a reception party held in Tokyo for a global company’s employee trip to Japan.

Approximately 750 employees and guests from around the world attended the event. As part of the evening reception, we created a dedicated origami experience booth where participants could stop by, select a design from a tablet, and learn how to fold it with guidance from our professional origami instructors.

The workshop gave guests an opportunity to experience Japanese culture in a relaxed and social setting during their company trip to Tokyo.

Many participants were trying origami for the first time. Throughout the reception, guests enjoyed taking photographs with their finished creations, comparing their work with colleagues, and bringing their origami home as a personal souvenir from Japan.

A Japanese Cultural Experience for an Employee Trip

International employee trips and incentive travel programs often include sightseeing, dining, meetings, and corporate receptions.

Adding a hands-on cultural activity can make the program more memorable and give participants a stronger sense of connection to the destination.

For this event, the origami workshop was incorporated directly into the reception party. Guests could participate at their own pace without interrupting the flow of the evening.

Some stopped by individually, while others joined together with colleagues. The activity naturally created conversation and interaction among employees from different countries and offices.

Because participants could complete a model within a relatively short time, the workshop worked well alongside food, drinks, networking, and other reception activities.

An Open Origami Booth During the Reception

Rather than asking all 750 participants to attend a scheduled class at the same time, we operated the workshop as an open experience booth.

Guests could visit whenever it suited them during the reception.

At the booth, participants selected the origami model they wanted to create and received step-by-step support from our instructors.

This flexible format is particularly effective for:

  • Welcome receptions
  • Farewell parties
  • Employee appreciation events
  • Incentive travel programs
  • Corporate retreats
  • International networking events
  • Gala dinners
  • Conference receptions

It allows a large number of guests to enjoy an authentic Japanese cultural experience while preserving the informal and social atmosphere of the party.

More Than a Craft Activity

Guests were interested not only in how to fold the models, but also in the history and cultural meaning of origami.

We received questions such as:

“When did origami begin?”

“Do all children in Japan learn origami?”

“What does the origami crane symbolize?”

Our instructors introduced participants to the role of paper in Japanese culture, the place of origami in childhood and education, and the symbolic associations of the crane with peace, hope, longevity, and good fortune.

This cultural context transformed the workshop from a simple craft activity into a meaningful part of the participants’ visit to Japan.

Why Origami Works for Corporate Trips to Japan

“Origami” is one of the most internationally recognized Japanese words.

Many overseas visitors already understand the basic concept, even if they have never folded origami themselves. This makes it approachable for guests from different countries, age groups, and professional backgrounds.

Origami is especially suitable for employee trips and corporate receptions because it is:

  • Immediately recognizable as Japanese
  • Easy to join without prior experience
  • Suitable for short or extended participation
  • Social and conversation-friendly
  • Visually engaging and highly photographable
  • Easy to combine with dining and networking
  • A cultural activity with a take-home souvenir
  • Adaptable for both small groups and large events

Rather than simply watching a performance, participants create something themselves. That sense of participation gives them a personal memory of their company trip to Tokyo.

For employee trips, the activity can also be designed around the purpose of the program, such as team building, employee recognition, networking, celebration, or cultural learning.

Origami Installations and Reception Design

In addition to workshops, Taro’s Origami Studio provides origami installations, venue decorations, live demonstrations, and participatory art experiences.

For another international corporate event at The Prince Park Tower Tokyo, our team created a large-scale origami installation and an interactive program for guests.

An origami workshop can also be combined with a large installation to create a unified visual and cultural theme throughout a reception venue.
