The Backstory

Last weekend Frank Ling and Ben Friesen traveled down to the outskirts of Washington D.C. for an amazing fall festival.  The event was spearheaded by the great folks at Skylark Creative Group, and when they needed an engaging idea for children and adults, they came to Taro’s Origami Studio.  Taro’s is no stranger to in-person origami events as you can see below.

In fact, Taro Yaguchi, the Origami Master who founded the studio in 2011 even recently held a mesmerizing giant origami performance in Japan for an outdoor tea ceremony at Happoen Garden.

The Setup

The event was set up as a staff celebration for General Dynamics the American industrial and technology company.  There were a wide variety of events and stations available for people and children of all ages.  The origami artists arrived with plenty of time to spare and began setting up their station and pre-folding models so that everyone could see the options.

The Preparation

Frank Ling, the Senior Teacher and Manager of the Brooklyn origami studio location flew in the morning of the event to teach and share models.  The theme of the day was farm animals, so Frank researched easily foldable and teachable versions of a cat, dog, duck, rooster, cow, and especially an adorable pig.  He also designed a brand new sheep model just for the event. Folders of all ages enjoyed learning from him and taking home a unique souvenir.

Ben Friesen, the other Senior Artist at the event, drove down from the Philadelphia area, and folded on the other side of the tent.  The two artists entertained countless children and adults and gave away about 100 or so amazing origami creations.  Some guests simply wanted to make requests from the models available in their favorite colors, while others jumped in and learned a new skill, but everyone left happy.
